I think the first page really lays out the whole thrust of Buber's argument ie the twofold nature of the way human beings relate to their world. We can either relate to eg another person as a personal presence (I-Thou) or a thing, an object (I-It). What MB is driving at I think is that we can encounter, and be affected by, the divine personal presence in and through another person (or animal or even stone pillar!) or we can just treat him/her/it as an object to be manipulated. Then MB spins it all out from there! I hope this helps & not too late! Good luck with your discussion!
